This year started with a visit at an active U2 underground construction site, gaining first-hand insight into the complexity of large-scale infrastructure development beneath the city. The site visit provided a rare opportunity to observe ongoing construction work within a dense urban environment and to understand the processes involved in expanding Vienna’s underground transport network.

During the visit, students were introduced to key construction methods used in underground projects, including excavation techniques, structural systems, and safety protocols. Particular emphasis was placed on the coordination required between engineering, architecture, and urban planning to ensure efficient construction while minimizing disruption at the surface.

The excursion highlighted the technical, logistical, and spatial challenges of building below ground, offering a tangible understanding of how contemporary infrastructure projects are planned and executed within existing urban fabric.
