Tree Root Research for innovation in Foundation Systems
The project is ongoing research located at The University of Akron, OH, USA. In collaboration with Tree expert
industry and Morton Arboretum, 3D models of real root systems of native tree species in Northeast Ohio are
created in order to abstract architectural and morphological root traits for root-inspired design proposals.
Photogrammetry and current architectural parametric design methods are applied to generate 3D printable
models for research and product design.
Application areas are foundation design for buildings as well as coastal restoration, to increase resilience of the
built environment in times of more severe climate impact and rising seawater levels.
